Handmade papers are made from the bark of the Danphe Shrub (locally known as Lokta ) which is wildly grown as well as cultivated only in the Himalayan region at an altitude of 6,500 to 10,000 feet. The Lokta paper is manufactured in Nepal from the local community or sustainable managed forest, without harming fragile forest ecology. The Lokta plant is regularly cut in a way to maintain the ecological balance.
In Nepal, the handmade Lokta paper has more than 1,500 years of history and it is specially made in the mountain areas. The historic manuscripts of Hindu & Buddhist, Royal edicts & legal documents are centuries old and always having recorded on Nepali handmade paper. In the ancient time the handmade paper are used for writing the Myths, Mantra, Sutra and Epics but in the present days the paper is also used for making standard Gift Items as well as home decorative.
Since the Lokta paper and made from the locally available raw materials, they are acid free and traditional.
